What a wonderful weekend, the street party in Trafalgar Way on the Saturday afternoon was really good fun and brought a patriotic tear to the eye, with flag waving and singing rousing songs. It was a lovely touch to give each child from the village a commemorative mug, which in future years will doubtless be much appreciated. Having watched the River Pageant and celebrations in the rain on TV from London on Sunday, we had a glorious day for the lighting of the beacon on Stockbridge Down on Monday night; watching the setting sun from this iron age hill fort and seeing the moon rise behind us was magical. Having had the foresight to bring some wine and enjoy the BBQ from the Robinson boys, it was a great evening, rounded off by lighting the magnificent beacon at 10.15pm. Looking around the darkening horizon from our vantage point, we could see other beacons dotted all round, up to 35 miles away, quite something. A wonderful evening, topped off by driving back home in our WWII Willys Jeep fully loaded with neighbours and singing the national anthem at full volume!
